About the SPS Library

Vertical slice of study spaceThe SPS Library is located on the New Museums site in the centre of Cambridge. There is access via the Free School Lane gate (open until 18:30 Mon-Fri and until 14:00 on Saturday); outside of these hours access can be gained via the Pembroke Street gate.

The SPS Library holds material relating to sociology and land economy. We do also hold social & developmental psychology material, however the majority is held in the Psychology Library on the Downing Site. For archaeology and anthropology material, please visit the Haddon Library on the Downing Site. We hold some politics material, however for more current materials, please visit the Seeley Historical Library.

The SPS Library is affiliated with Cambridge University Library, and provides for Undergraduate and MPhil courses, as well as for research, in Sociology and Land Economy in the Faculty of Human, Social, and Political Science (HSPS) and Department of Land Economy.

We aim to provide excellent service to all library visitors; we're always happy to answer any questions you may have so please do get in touch

The library is open throughout the year, including vacation periods although with reduced hours. Please have a look at our Opening Hours page for full details.

Current staff, students or visiting scholars at the university are welcome to register to borrow at the library. To register, please bring your University card to the issue desk where we will activate your SPS Library account. Registrations can only be processed between 9.30am - 5.00pm, Monday - Friday, if you visit outside of these hours we may not be able to process your application.

Unfortunately it is not possible for alumni or members of other universities to borrow from the library, but with permission from the Library Manager, you are welcome to use the library resources during the vacation period.
